The Beauty of Merchandising
By Sydney Koval
As I get ready to graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Fashion Merchandising, I’ve been reflecting a lot on the path that brought me here—and where I want to go next.
Fashion has always been more than clothes to me. It’s a story, a reflection of the world around us, and a way to connect with people. From the moment I stepped into my first merchandising class, I knew I wanted to be a part of the process that brings ideas to life and turns trends into meaningful experiences for consumers.
Why Merchandising?
For me, merchandising sits at the perfect intersection of creativity and strategy. I love analyzing trends, building assortments, and understanding the why behind what people buy. My coursework at VCU—combined with hands-on projects and real-world case studies—has helped me see how powerful a well-planned assortment or thoughtful product placement can be.
More importantly, it’s shown me how every touchpoint matters: the visual display, the pricing strategy, the storytelling. Each element plays a role in creating an experience that resonates.
Learning Outside the Classroom
Some of my best learning has happened beyond the lecture hall. I’ve been fortunate to connect with professionals in the industry, ask a lot of questions, and listen closely to their insights. Recently, I had a fact-finding call with a friend who works in the space I hope to enter. That conversation helped me better understand not just the roles available—but the mindset it takes to succeed.
What I’ve realized is that building a career you love is about being open. Open to feedback, open to growth, and open to where your curiosity leads you.
What I’m Looking For
As I begin this next chapter, I’m looking to join a company where I can contribute as both a thinker and a doer. I want to be on a team that values innovation, supports development, and gives young professionals the opportunity to bring fresh perspectives to the table.
Whether it’s in buying, planning, brand development, or trend forecasting—I’m excited to dig in, learn fast, and help bring great ideas to life.
Final Thoughts
I know I’m just getting started, but I’m clear on this: I want to do work that matters. I want to be in rooms where strategy and style collide. And I want to keep growing into a career that challenges and inspires me every day.
Thanks for reading—and if you're working on something cool in fashion, merchandising, or retail, I’d love to connect.
